How to Treat Acne

Acne is a common skin condition which mainly affects teenagers but can also appear at any stage of life. It’s caused by blockages in the follicle consisting of excess oil and dead skin cells to create inflammation and bumps.

There are a few different types of acne, some of the more common types we see include;

Hormonal Acne, also known as adult acne. This is a result from a build up of sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells. It can appear as papules, pustules or cysts and can appear not only on the face but also, neck, back, chest and shoulders.

Cystic Acne are pus filled cysts that are deep under the skin, they are often painful and can cause scarring if not treated right.

Nodular Acne are also known as blind pimples. They start deep below the surface and make there way up into a painful red lump on the surface. They don’t contain any fluid so if they are picked at, can often cause scarring.

Fungal Acne, this is actually caused by a yeast build in the hair follicle. It presents as small bumps which can be itchy and inflamed.

We often find ourselves thinking that in order to get rid of the acne, we must get rid of all the oil. When someone with acne does this, the skin then has to work twice as hard to produce oil that we need for our skin to function properly. This often will put an acne skin into a vicious cycle because the oil now being produced will have been done quickly and therefore be thicker and more congesting.

Treating acne has two parts to it. Treating internally as well as externally. It can be surprising how much of a difference what we put into our bodies, or what we aren’t putting into our bodies can make. As well as food, there are other factors that can also contribute to blocked pores;

  • Excessive sweating or if sweat is left to dry on the skin

  • Genetics

  • Hormones also conditions such as PCOS

  • Medications especially steroids

  • Skincare Products and make up that aren’t suited to the skin

  • Stress and Anxiety

We want to ensure that we are only removing enough of the oil and bacteria to heal the skin so the skin still has full functionality.
