The Essential Guide to Gentle Exfoliation for Radiant Skin
Exfoliating is an important step in our skincare routines, but how often are we supposed to exfoliate? And how?
At Jamele, we follow the concept of corneotherapy, and our skincare ranges also adhere to this.
Corneotherapy is the science of maintaining and restoring healthy skin. For so long, the outermost layer of the skin—the stratum corneum—was considered a useless dead layer that needed to be removed through harsh treatments and products. We now know this is not true; it is a very integral part of our skin. We need this layer for protection as it is the first line of skin barrier defence. If the stratum corneum is damaged, we start seeing increased inflammation, which can lead to other skin conditions.
What this means for our exfoliation step is that we want to keep it gentle, using enzymes, AHAs, or a gentle bead-type exfoliator. Most skins can benefit from exfoliating once a week; however, as we age, our cellular turnover slows down, so we can increase the time between treatments. Our therapists can advise you on a timeline for your skin.
Janesce has different exfoliants to choose from: Gentle Clearing Wash and Gentle Enzyme Peel.
Gentle Enzyme Peel uses pineapple and papaya enzymes to gently dissolve redundant skin cells. It is very gentle and can be used on sensitive skins. To use, massage into the skin for 3-4 minutes before rinsing and soaking the skin. This is also fantastic to use overnight if you suffer from Keratosis Pilaris (little bumps on the back of the arms).
Gentle Clearing Wash uses almond meal to gently exfoliate the skin. This is great for oily skins or skin that needs a bit more. It is not for sensitised skin. With water, keep pressing over the skin, not a rubbing motion. Oily skins use less water.
Dermaviduals have the DMS Peeling Cream, which uses DMS-encapsulated jojoba beads to polish the skin. DMS stands for Derma Membrane Structure and is an oil composition that resembles the membrane structure of the skin barrier. After cleansing, pat dry the skin and, using very soft pressure, massage the skin in circular motions to repair and polish the skin.
Environ has Hydrating Clay Masque, which uses kaolin clay to absorb excess oils and polish the skin’s surface. It is gentle enough for most skin types. To use this masque, begin by removing makeup, patting the skin dry, and then massaging the Pre-Cleansing Oil into the skin before massaging the Hydrating Clay Masque on top of the oil. Remove with water and then cleanse with your normal Environ cleanser. This masque can also be used as an overnight treatment by wearing a thin layer.
Environ also has other options from their focused ranges containing different types of AHAs, which are also exfoliating. The Youth+ range has a Concentrated Alpha Hydroxy Toner as well as the Revival Masque. The Clarity+ range has Sebu-Clear Masque. The Moisture+ range has Alpha Hydroxy Night Cream.
We have plenty of options available to help you find your perfect match for what your skin needs. We’d love to help you with your skin!
