Holistic Solutions for Skin Sensitivity: Healing from Within and Beyond

This time of year can cause all sorts of sensitivity with our skin, both on our face and body. Spring brings us wind and pollen, as well as fast temperature changes and higher humidity. If you suffer from allergies, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis, this season can prove challenging.

All of these conditions require different treatments and care, but ultimately, they all result in the breakdown of our skin's barrier function, which causes the symptoms we see on the skin. Redness, dry, flaky, irritated skin or patches of skin are the main signs that our barrier isn’t holding up as it should be. Our primary focus needs to be on restoring the barrier before addressing any other concerns you may have.

Our skin barrier is the outermost layer of our skin. It is called the stratum corneum and is made up of skin cells and keratin. They work to protect our body from external pollutants and bacteria, as well as holding hydration in the skin. When our stratum corneum becomes compromised, this is when the problems start.

This can be caused by external factors or internal ones. We now know there is a link between an unhappy gut microbiome and an unhappy skin barrier, so we need to be looking at our insides just as much as the skin itself.

So, what can we do to help?

At Jamele, we can help with healing your gut with our Bestow range, as well as guide you on your skin journey. Bestow’s internal products are designed to heal the skin from within, complemented by recipe books to help you feel your best. Combining the Gut Love + powder, Vitality powder, Collagen Boost, and Beauty Oils will provide your body with prebiotics, probiotics, fibre, digestive enzymes, omega-3, omega-6, and collagen to promote healing of both the gut and skin. The Gut-Skin Connection Book is a fantastic guide to help you begin your journey.

Topically, we want to keep our skincare to a minimum, using only what is necessary to heal and soothe.

Dermaviduals offer many concentrates and products for healing, and for the most sensitive of skins, their Milk Cleanser can also double as a moisturiser until the skin regains strength. Environ has their Comfort range, which includes Colostrum Gel and Antioxidant Gel—both are excellent for very reactive skin. Janesce also has a range of options, with Avocado and Sesame Oil being particularly effective at reducing inflammation. Bestow offers their own range of facial products, The Graces. Using The Soothing Serum and Soothing Oil together is an excellent way to diffuse inflammation and treat sensitised skin.

Skin sensitivities are all different, and it may take time and consistency to see results. Our Holistic Skin Consultations are an excellent way for us to identify what may be driving your skin issues. These consultations allow us to delve into your internal wellbeing, as well as your routine, so we can address your skin from both sides.
